Discover the Magic of a Turkish Bath

Overview

Architecture and Layout

Turkish baths are typically large, ornate buildings with impressive domed chambers and marble interiors. The layout consists of three main areas: the cold room, the warm room, and the hot room. The cold room is the entrance area, where visitors prepare and relax before proceeding to the warmer chambers.

Steam and Heat

Visitors move to the warm room after changing into a traditional cotton towel called a peshtemal. They acclimatize to the heat and steam while lounging on heated marble platforms. The warm room prepares the body for the hotter temperatures in the next chamber.

Exfoliation and Massage

Moving on to the hot room, visitors are exposed to higher temperatures and humidity. They may choose to receive a vigorous body scrub known as kese, performed by a bath attendant known as a tellak. The kese involves using a coarse mitt to remove dead skin cells and stimulate blood circulation. The attendant may also provide a relaxing massage using soap foam.

Relaxation

After the exfoliation and massage, visitors return to the warm or cold room to cool down and relax. They can rest on the marble platforms, sip traditional Turkish tea, or converse with others. This phase allows the body to return to average temperature gradually.

The Turkish bath experience is not only focused on physical cleansing but also emphasizes social interaction, relaxation, and mental well-being. It provides a peaceful environment for individuals to unwind, rejuvenate their bodies, and socialize with friends or family.
