What to see in the Laleli area?

The Laleli district of Istanbul offers many interesting places to visit. Here are some attractions and places to see in the area:

Laleli Mosque

The Laleli Mosque, after which the area is named, was built between 1760 and 1763 by order of Sultan Mustafa III by architect Tahir Agha. The mosque, built of limestone (to protect the building from moisture), is actually a kulliyya. But the architect Tahir Agha, who wanted to make this place more convenient, built other buildings under Kulliye as a basement under the mosque. For this reason, the mosque is located quite high above the road level. Of course, when the ground level was lowered for road work in the 1950s, the Laleli Mosque remained higher. The mausoleum of the Laleli Mosque contains the tombs of Sultan Mustafa III, Selim III and Adilshah Kadın, the wife of Sultan Mustafa III. You can also see traces of the Prophet Muhammad in this tomb. Just like the inside of this tomb, the outside is also very interesting. By the way, you can see birdhouses on the outer walls of the tomb.

Tashkhan Laleli

The Laleli Mosque was built in the shape of Kulliye, like Sultanahmet and Suleymaniye. When a complex is mentioned, it means that structures such as a mosque, hammam, madrassa and bazaar are located together. In addition to the shops in the basement, there is also a bazaar called Tashkhan, which provides income for the Laleli Mosque. During the Ottoman period, Aksaray and Laleli were used by the Janissaries and Ottoman officers as a bazaar for trade in Tashan, as they were the places where the Janissaries’ barracks were located. Therefore, the second known name of Tashkhan is sipahi. Another name for Tashkhan is “Bezistan”, because this hotel usually sells fabric. Over time, the word “bezistan” changed and became “bedesten”.

Monastery of Mirelaion (Smell of Myra)

When Istanbul was conquered by the Ottomans, everyone was put to the sword. It is wrong to think that nothing remains of the Byzantine state. The Bodrum Mosque in Laleli is one of the best arguments. The monastery of Old Mirelayon, built by Emperor Romanus Lekapenos in the 10th century, was converted into a mosque by Mesih Pasha, nephew of the last emperor of the Palaiologan dynasty, the 11th Constantine. Locals call it the Bodrum Mosque because underneath it is a large rotunda-shaped structure (probably a cistern). Finding this building in Laleli is really difficult. Because this building, like other buildings in Laleli, was lost between hotels and textile factories.

The monastery, located here during the iconoclastic period, was given the old name Psarelaion (Smell of fried fish). Later, when the iconoclastic period ended, this monastery was named Mirelaion, which means “peaceful, fragrant.” This monastery was used as a cemetery (crypt) for Emperor Roman Lecapinus and his family. Thus, the tradition of burying in the Gavarium temple, which existed for 600 years as a royal cemetery tradition, came to an end.

Monastery of Constantine Guba

During the Byzantine period, ships of the Byzantine fleet entered and left Lykos Bay. Constantine Lips, one of the main admirals of the 9th century, built a monastery in the name of Emperor Leon 6 next to the Lykos stream, like Kilich Ali Pasha in Tophane. In the 13th century, the Palaiologan dynasty added another church in honor of John the Baptist. After the conquest of Istanbul, the monastery was converted into a mosque by the Kazakh Rumeli Fenerizade Ali Effendi. The name of Sheikh Isa, one of his famous teachers, was added and Fenari became the name of Isa.

Vatan Street

Vatan Street, which is famous for the fact that Adnan Mendes landed a plane here when it was built, is one of two streets that, like a knife, divides the Historic Peninsula into two parts. It is sad that hundreds of historical artifacts were lost to history during its construction. Today it is the largest street in Istanbul in terms of the number of lanes. The street is lined with government buildings such as the Fatih Municipality and the Istanbul Police Department. Every year republican celebrations take place on this street.
