History of Kadikoy District

The history of the Kadikoy District in Istanbul is full of events and transformations over many centuries.

Modern Kadikoy has a deep history, dating back to the Greek and Roman eras. These lands were part of a significant commercial and cultural center. The history of this region was based on significant historical and cultural events.

During the Byzantine Empire, there were churches, monasteries and other Christian buildings on the territory of Kadikoy. Traces of this time can be seen in the architecture and cultural life of the area.

When the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople (now Istanbul), Kadikoy became an important place of development. It was an important transport and trade hub connecting Asia with Europe. Numerous mosques, baths and other structures were built in this area during the Ottoman Empire.

In the 1900s, Kadikoy continued to develop as the commercial and cultural center of Istanbul. The area witnessed mass migration in the mid-20th century, as well as the development of urban infrastructure.

Over time, Kadikoy has undergone changes in architecture, demographics and socio-cultural environment, but has retained its character and individuality. Kadıköy combines Istanbul’s rich heritage with modernity, making it a popular place to live, work and relax.

After Enver Pasha went abroad at the end of World War I, the statue was forgotten in the garden of Enver Pasha’s palace. Some 50 years later, it moves to the garden of the Hilton Hotel in Taksim, then in front of the Lutfi Kırdar Exhibition and Convention Center, and then to Taksim Gezi Park.

Subsequently, in the 1970s, it was moved to Kadikoy municipality and, after remaining here for about 20 years, it was moved to its current location in the early 1990s. She traveled from Paris to Kadikoy for over 150 years, and as you can see, this is not an ordinary statue.
